Australia Bicycle Touring Photos Off to Races

How far would you go for a camel?

Considering the riding conditions, I was beginning to think I should have one of these... but they didn't look any more comfortable than my bicycle! Big events in the outback are camel races: guaranteed to entertain, as camels are surely one of the most stubborn beasts alive. When we met up with these folks on the Oodnadatta Track, they were on their way to a weekend competition. We later heard via the grapevine that one of the contestant leaders had suddenly had second thoughts -- in the middle of the race, no less -- and abruptly turned tail. The last it was seen, it was galloping full-out across the outback. (We can attest there are, in fact, still herds of wild camels roaming the outback... they were imported to help build the Ghan rail line to Alice Springs, and were turned loose upon its completion.)
