I was reading Neil Anderson's
Partners in Grime and when I came to the color plates
in the middle, I was truly impressed in both his writing skill
as well as with a camera. Then the last photo in that group set
my college photography instructor's juices flowing and I wanted
to grab a red pencil and slap a big A+ on it.
It has everything that I ever tried to teach
budding photographers. It has contrast in both color and texture,
from the flash of red panniers to the yellow grass, azure water,
green hills and smoky mountain topped by puffy white clouds.
The lighting is from the right which leads
the eye to the mountain, as does the composition of the stream,
giving a gradual shift from dark on the right to lighter on the
left.
The tree on the right and branch on the left
frames the point of interest and gives depth to the photo. And
finally, the bicycle almost hidden in the shadows tells everyone
that the photographer was on a bicycle tour.
They say a good photo tells its own story
and needs no caption. This one certainly fills the bill.
