Bicycle touring Scotland. Lots
of neat history, too. While bicycle touring in Scotland we passed
through the town of New Abbey, Scotland, and viewed the red stone
remains of Sweetheart Abbey. Wonderfully preserved rows of arches
shimmered in the waning afternoon light, and the remains of half
an end wall presented a fabulous mullion window. The abbey grounds
and adjoining cemetery, trimmed as immaculately as any world-class
putting green, positively glowed. The romantic name, Sweetheart
Abbey, comes from a woman who decreed her husband's heart be
entombed in the altar (was that supposed to mean she loved him
wholeheartedly?). |
