Marcus and Icky
Many types of mushrooms were in the forest. There were orange, white, brown and black colored varieties. I picked as many varieties as I could find and put them on a moss covered stump to take a group photo.
The next morning we leisurely rode to Pegnitz. Pegnitz had a church with a huge clock tower. Murray wouldn't arrive until tomorrow. We tried phoning Marcus and Icky, friends of Murray's from last year, but there was no answer. Probably, they were at work. We rode around town and accidentally found Murray's old address. Marianne lived across the street. She came out and said she thought someone else lived in Murray's old apartment now. She invited us in to use her phone. While we drank tea and ate chocolate-swirl marble cake, she busily tracked down other players on the team to find out where Marcus and Icky worked. After much persuasion she acquiesced to let me take a picture of her and her husband behind a vase of beaming yellow daisies.
Marianne retrieved her bike and we followed her downtown to where Icky worked in an optician store. Delighted and surprised to see us, Icky kept saying, "So you're Murray's sister!" Murray had told us he would try to phone them to let them know we were coming, but he mustn't have been able to reach them. Marianne expressed if we didn't have a place to stay tonight, we were welcome to come back to her house. Soon, Icky finished work and we followed her to their apartment around the corner. Marcus arrived home from his construction job. Marcus played goalie for the hockey team. There was a picture on the wall of Marcus, totally buried in a pile of stones, except for his head. I quickly saw why Marcus and Murray were friends. Icky walked with Sharon and me to Marcus's mom and dad's house. Icky foolishly asked if she could help with anything. I promptly gave her my bike to push. It was uphill and she was soon regretting her offer. Passing a man, he grinned and said, "That's the way it should be."
Icky said, "That's the way it always is. The women do the work!"
They showed us upstairs to Marcus's old flat, where Sharon and I would be staying. The bedroom window overlooked Pegnitz and provided a great view.
With Marcus and Icky and Marcus's dad we walked to the corner pub to have Yugoslav food, beers and anise-based shooters. Marcus and Icky were tying the knot October 28 and invited us to their wedding.
Things worth the most in life are immeasurable.
