No Room At The Inn
Our host mother gave us apples from her tree before we rode off into the fog. Mornings had been extremely foggy, hanging around until the sun built up enough strength to burn it off. On most days that occurred by 11:00 a.m., but there were no guaranties.
Nördlingen was our first stop. It was a walled city built in the crater of a meteorite. Guess they figured meteorites never struck twice in the same place so they were safe. The gate towers were the feature I liked most about Nördlingen. We walked a short section of the wall before viewing the church. Looking at all the stairs ascending the bell tower, we declined to go up to have a look. Instead, we rested in the pews with their wood carved hand rests. Each row had a different head shaped at the end. My favorite was the skull.
From Nördlingen we made our way to the castle in Harburg. The castle had a wooden gate with spikes on the bottom used, in the olden days, to keep out the enemy. Its present day use was to keep out tourists after closing hours. Sharon and Sherry walked to the castle while I sat and read. In a few minutes they returned-the castle had closed for the day. That gate was still doing its job.
We tried calling a host family in town, but the woman said they had two kids and didn't have room for us. We figured since they lived on the Romantic Road and inundated with cyclists every summer they were tired of seeing our sorry faces. Sharon and Sherry volunteered me to be the phonemeister. "Whenever I phone, they always say no," Sherry said. I tried phoning others in town but it was a poor time of day. Working people weren't home yet. Since it was getting dark we gave up and headed for the nearby forest.
