Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
June 19 Monday sunny Bicycle touring England
Official rest day.
Bruni drove us to a pub by the canal and then walked with us to some bird sanctuary ponds. A few people were working, painting and scraping their house boats. We passed some fishermen. One didn't seem to care where he set up his tent. The tent stakes were pounded right into the gravel pathway and walkers had to go around. At least when we free bicycle camp, we try to be as considerate to others as possible. I could see his sleeping bag thrown inside the tent, so it appeared as though he had either spent the night there or was planning to.
We returned to the car. Bruni drove home while Sharon and I continued walking along the canal back to Tring Station. I felt like one of those mice dropped off on the other side of the canal. I should have asked the guy painting his houseboat to dab some on my fingernails. "Yep, the same one keeps coming back." At a bridge, we walked to a field above the canal. By the time we figured out it didn't go back down to the canal, we had already gone quite a ways on the path, so we decided to carry on. There were lots of ladybugs, or ladybirds, swaying in the breeze of the heads of oats.
Eventually the path rejoined the road somewhere between Tring and Tring Station. We walked over a bridge and down the lane.
When we arrived back at Alastair and Bruni's, Bruni was on the phone talking to Ali, one of Tina's skiing buddies who lives in London. She had arranged for us to stay there overnight if we wanted to go back into London for more exploring.
