July 25 Tuesday Sunny 25º C Bicycle touring Scotland
Bicycle tours are much nicer cycling when the sun is shining. Even if those Irish called it a soft rain, it still got me soaked whether it was soft or not.
At Pinwherry, Scotland, we ate a healthy mixture of granola Muesli and fruit. Lots of fiber for fueling those bicycle pedals.
We want to bicycle tour in Norway next. We phoned ferry companies and found it costs £83 from Newcastle, England, versus £100 from Aberdeen, Scotland, so we have changed course and are now bicycling south instead of north.
Route B7027 was a little mountain road that passed forests and small lakes, termed "lochs" in Scotland. We bicycled past cattle that have fuzzy black hair. They look like they have just had a perm. (We passed a hair shop earlier that was named Curl Up and Dye.)
Newton Stewart, Scotland, is a busy little tourist stop situated well on the main route. A wide river flows through town. We ate a litre of vanilla ice cream with lemon and lime swirls while sitting on a bench watching the river flow placidly under a four-arch bridge.
Route A712 is a scenic route through the Galloway Forest Park. Mainly other tourists out for a drive. We bicycled past a huge dam with a tea shop on one side of a large reservoir lake. Bicycling A712 along Lock Ken is peaceful with conifer reflections in the calm water.
Sharon found a delightful free bicycle camp spot by a cascading waterfall. We pitched our tent on a ledge overlooking the lake. It is wonderfully serene. Sharon washed up in a rock basin. Then we retired inside the tent to avoid the pesky flies.
