August 31 Thursday rainy Bicycle touring Germany
We turn our touring bicycles to the right as we come out of our overnight free forest camping spot and onto the main road ... as we had already experiences the cobbles to our left.
Our smooth bike riding road ended in the next town and we were back to bicycle touring on cobbles. Our plans were to bicycle to the nearest campground, set up our Kelty tent, grab a shower, and then, clean and refreshed, take a train into Berlin so we could do some sightseeing without our bikes.
But we couldn't find even one of the three campgrounds listed in Arran and Bec's "Let's Go" book. We tried asking people for directions to the campgrounds. Responses ranged from "Go straight," to "They're private" (whatever that means). Anyway, by the time my bicycle tire flatted, it was noonish, raining, and we were farther from Berlin than when we started cycling this morning.
Giving up on finding a campground, we pointed our bicycles for Potsdam, Germany.
Arriving in Potsdam thoroughly soaked we found a swimming pool. For 1.50 douche marks each we had a hot shower. The floor was heated. Oh, what a loverly warm feeling for cold cycle tourist tootsies. We returned outside to our touring bicycles to find it was still raining. We ate Muesli while huddling and waiting for the rain to stop pouring. Cycle tourists can be a sorry lot. Puddles of water were lying everywhere.
We eventually abandoned the wet outside world and went inside the pool foyer area. We waited until it began to get dark. Still there was no abatement from the heavens. Nearly dark, we sloshed to our bikes and rode about a kilometre to a treed area on the edge of Potsdam and set up our bicycle touring tents.
