October 17 Tuesday sunny Bicycle touring Germany Finally saw the Alps today. They really do exist. First they were hazy, then as the fog dissipated they became more distinct. Pulled our loaded touring bicycles to a stop to eat beside River Lech. A couple of kayakers practiced maneuvers on the river. I went over to take a picture of them and my camera shutter tripped on its own. That should be an interesting photo. I don't even know if a kayaker was in the viewfinder when it went off. I was just focusing on the white water. I'll have to title it: "Anticipation." We had a relaxing bike ride to Fussen through rural countryside. We would have been there sooner but we got lost trying to follow various bike route signs. At one particular unmarked intersection I chose the best pavement and wee ended up at a dead end in someone's farmyard. The road was paved right to the farmer's doorstep. We couldn't believe it, but no matter how hard we looked there wasn't a way out of there ... except back the way we had just come. Uphill, of course. Sherry was ticked with my poor choice of directions. Just call me Tracker. She wanted me to ride her bike back up the hill. A grandmother and little boy feeding a pony through a fence confirmed my fears. Yep, we had to go back the way we had just come. Didn't they know the biker's unwritten credo? Never go back. Maybe we could camp in their yard and get an early start in the morning? But no, our cycling hosts in Fussen, Bruno and Renata, were waiting for us. We turned our loaded touring rigs around and, strapping toes into toe-clips, grunted back up the hill we had just blissfully sailed down. It was worth it. Bruno and Renata had a whole suite just for us. We had our own kitchen, bathroom, and combination living bedroom. Very luxurious. Renata brought down tea and cakes for us. We sure were getting spoiled. Sherry thinks this bicycle touring is pretty easy stuff. Ha. Just wait till we cycle over the Alps! |
