August 14 Sunday Bicycle touring from Esk Saskatchewan - Sheho Saskatchewan
The sun is shining again in a clear blue sky. We are off by 8 AM. There is lots of dew on the old tent fly this morning. Only two trains passed by last night. The ground was shaking so much, I dreamt we were set up on the tracks. And I think I saw almost the shortest train possible today. It was only two engines. I could imagine hearing someone yelling at the engineer as he left the yard: "Hey Bud! Wait! Come back Bud."
It is Sunday and we can't find any open stores. I buy two litres of milk from the back door of a restaurant in Jansen. There is absolutely nothing going on in the sleepy little town. We eat breakfast in what used to be a school yard.
We are surrounded by wheat fields. There are a few small bunches of trees. It is not too hot. We roll on down the highway and stop for a popsicle and egg rolls at a Chinese café in a town with dirt roads. How do you know you're in Saskatchewan? There is a combine parallel parked on main street. (We saw a combine on a pedestal yesterday.)
Had a shower at the pool in Foam Lake. There were some ducks. Even saw a lake today -- Big Quill. The first large lake I've seen in Saskatchewan. There are mainly sloughs with cattails and green algae growing on top in a scum. Saw a heron wading this morning. There are quite a few raptors along the roadside, sitting on fence posts or cruising around looking for easy road kill to pick up. Still lots of mosquitoes.
We eat supper at a treed roadside picnic area. There is a wheat field on one side of us. Oh, yeah, we're in Saskatchewan. Make that wheat fields on all sides of us.
We have a good after dinner bike ride for another twenty kilometres down the road and find a free campsite in Sheho. We rode 80 miles today and my butt is sore. As Ryan would say "The sparks are flying." We are 62 kilometres from Yorktown.
