Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
August 20 Saturday Bicycle touring from Carberry Manitoba to Swan Lake Manitoba
This morning, oddly enough, on our way out of Carberry I find potatoes strewn along the side of the road. As I stop to pick them up I tell Sharon she had better be careful what she wishes for -- she just might get it. Life on the road can bring some strange events. It turns out that Carberry is known as Spud City. We pass by acres and acres of potatoes.
We go by sand dunes which are mostly covered by trees and grass.
At a Co-op we buy half a watermelon and eat it at the picnic table outside the store. Wouldn't want to carry that on a touring bike ... although we did on our bicycle tour across the States.
We stay the night at the town of Swan Lake. A drive-in is the only thing open in town, so we go in for a pizza. We ask the owners if we can camp behind their drive-in. They say, "Sure, plenty of room."
I am writing in my journal at a picnic table at the rear of the drive-in when the mother comes out and asks if we would like to take a shower. After that we are invited in for a late night snack. They give us glasses of milk and fresh warm cinnamon buns. I said, "I don't see cinnamon buns on the menu." "Oh, no," she says. "We just make those once a week for family." No one is ever far from home when mother's are around.
