Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
December 5 Monday Bicycle touring Spain from a park outside of Malaga Spain to Marabella Spain
We eat breakfast and revel in our freedom. Bicycle touring is a great way to open up new vistas. We hang around the park, enjoying the sunshine after all the rain of the past couple of days. We reassess our trip priorities. What do we want to do on this long distance bicycle touring trip? Sharon and I both agree that the key to happiness on a bicycle touring trip is definitely less rushing. Just sit back, pedal, enjoy the scenery and people. Gain some new experiences. We know that they're not all going to be fun, but we intend to make them as fun as possible. We'll try to keep our sense of humour along the way.
We get on our fully loaded touring bicycles and head out onto the busy road. This morning the traffic doesn't seem so bad. Some of them even wave to us.
Just past Marabella there are unfinished hotel building after unfinished building. They were started in the 70 and 80s when there was no end in sight to the tourism economy. Then the recession hit and tourists stopped coming. Judging from the amount of traffic, I can't imagine how busy it must be in high season. There are lots of hotels for sale.
One thing about there being so many unfinished hotels around -- lots of free accommodation. We push our touring bikes up six flight of stairs and free camp on top of the roof of a partially completed hotel. We have a great view of the stars.
