December 9 Friday Bicycle touring Spain from Archidona Spain to Granada Spain
Freezing cold this morning. Icicles hang from the screen door of our cold bicycle touring tent. A sheet of ice encases the rain fly. Brrr.
We cycled into Granada and then started to look for the campground we picked from Rae and Nigel's tourist book. After searching for two hours, we still hadn't found it. We are where it is supposed to be located and conclude it has met its demise in favour of a freeway bypass.
We lift our fully loaded touring bikes over a cement culvert into a grove of trees where the campground should have been. A moat surrounds us on three sides and a steep bank up to the unopened freeway is on the fourth. A homeowner, with a wall behind his property, peers over and watches silently as we grunt and groan to lift our bikes up the steep bank and over the culvert and then balance our bicycles and packs along a plank crossing the moat.
We push our bikes into the gathering gloom and disappear across a field, over another water channel, and then down a bank to a row of trees. I must confess we're not too worried about having unwanted visitors tonight -- even though we are beside the city and it is a Friday night. I think even the civil guards will have a tough time finding us tonight.
