Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
January 19 Thursday Bicycle touring Italy from bicyle free-camped beside a lake near Porto Torres Sardinia Sardega to a free camping spot alongside the Mannu River
Scored some cashola! The auto bank teller for the National Bank on the Visa Plus system let me withdraw the maximum allowable: 300,000 lire (about $300). We immediately bought bread and pizza and found a sheltered square behind the main street out of the freezing wind.
We cycled through two scary tunnels -- long and hard to see in, just past Sassari. Got off SS131 and headed onto a little-used country road.
The view of the valley was incredible. Beautiful green and tons of rock: mountains, cliffs, fences. Ledges carved to resemble waves cresting. Black and orange rock mixed together resembling tiger ice cream.
Lots of sheep grazing on the side hills.
Some twiggy, gnarled, leafless vineyards. Fields of spiky artichokes with wilted leaves and drooping heads, the latest victims of frost. Orange nets are spread under the olive trees to catch the bitter fruit.By a sign warning of sudden floods we chose a high campsite along the Mannu River. Took our ground sheet and fried chicken breasts down by the river's edge. We keep hearing sounds like rocks being thrown into the water. Only a few cars pass on the secluded road. Amazing stars. Black tonight. Bicycle touring certainly can bring some incredible sights.
