Feb 25 Sat Bicycle touring Italy Sardinia from an abandoned farmhouse (barn, actually) past Nuoro Sardinia to Fordongianus Sardegna Actually there wasn't much left of the farmhouse except a few stone exterior walls and crumbling stone walls dividing the rooms inside. No roof was on most of the structure. There was a roof over the barn part where we were. I prayed that it didn't fall on us during the night. The wind was howling as plaster was being ripped off the walls in tiny sandblasting bits. The barn was being demolished a bit at a time right in front of our eyes. The floor was dirt with a few rocks and cow pies thrown in for good measure. Thankfully the cow patties were dry. Two small glassless windows faced east with wrought iron in a spade-shape over top. A three-by-three-foot wooden door high up the wall of the fifteen foot ceiling banged loudly twice as the wind swung it violently on its creaky hinges. The wind was still strong this morning. Where does it come from and how long can it last? It is making our bicycle tour of Sardinia a little challenging. We packed up our cycle gear and headed straight into the wind once more. We ate lunch overlooking Lake Omodeo in a sheltered spot. It was actually warm in the sun. I had a headache, probably from the beer, as we climbed up along a bank. Some scenic views on the little traveled road. Saw a farmer unloading three sheep out of his car's hatchback. As they passed us Sharon said he must be taking them out for a weekend sheep drive. We cycled back into Fordongianus. We got in too late and it's too cold to wash up. It is a fair-sized town and yet it is so different from places back home in America or Canada. There is little traffic. We saw people filling water bottles and washing clothes at the baths; an old guy on a mule was riding up the hill; there are sheep along the road past the park; we can hear pigs squealing, dogs barking, a generator, an owl, birds, and people's voices. |
