Happy Anniversary
"For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul."
~ Judy GarlandIt was September 1st - our tenth wedding anniversary. "Happy Anniversary!" I sang upon awakening, and leaned over to give Sharon a syrupy smooch (it must have been those maples we were camped under).
"Mmmm," she replied, giving me a big smacker in return. "Maybe we should stay in bed all day?"
I smiled. "Good idea. How about if we treat ourselves to a motel room tonight ... steak dinner ... Jacuzzi?"
Sharon must have thought it a fine idea. We had one of our fastest getaways ever.
Past Lake Michigamme, we swung off the busy main highway and onto a sinuous county road near Ishpeming and Negaunee.
Folks warned us, "Steep hills ahead!" But any hills we came across turned out to be more down than up. For awhile we even traipsed along a spectacular flower-lined bike path with a perfect view of Lake Superior. An anniversary gift from the scenic cycling gods?
In Marquette, we splurged on a motel room. Being inside somewhere warm and dry, the temptation proved too great - we hauled our bikes inside, unloaded our panniers, and spread out our damp gear. "Is that moss growing on the tent?" Sharon joshed. Our space looked like a Camper's Village bargain basement.
While I enjoyed a luxurious steamy shower, Sharon ransacked a nearby grocery store. She bought steaks, all the trimmings, an assortment of snacks, and even a watermelon.
"Want to relax in the Jacuzzi before supper?" I asked her upon her return.
That was a mistake. After the Jacuzzi's hot hydrotherapy massage, our legs felt as heavy as oak trees with all the sap drained from them. "It's a good thing we don't have to cycle anywhere," Sharon murmured, sleepily.
Too fatigued to cook steak, we munched a few snacks and called it an early night. Warm and content in the soft bed, we fell asleep, wrapped in each other's arms.
