Sweet Buns

"Come along inside ... We'll see if tea and buns can make the world a better place."
~ Kenneth Grahame

Near Gould City, on Highway 2, a roadside restaurant sign boasted: World's Largest Cinnamon Buns. The sweet sign lured me in like a two-year-old spotting a candy store.

We each ordered one. Ha, I thought, I could probably eat both myself. When the buns arrived, their size shocked me. The suckers were a full eight inches square and an astounding six inches tall! Sharon and I shared one, still warm and oozing, laden with high-calorie brown sugary and cinnamon goodness. It filled us. Holding my stomach, I wandered back outside and, like a squirrel storing nuts for the winter, cached the leftover undisputed World's Largest Cinnamon Bun inside my pannier for later.

The extra-large calories propelled us along Lake Michigan's lakeshore. In the dark, near Mackinac Island, we were in serious tourist country. Labor Day long weekend had increased the usual hordes of city-evacuees. Non-stop traffic plied the roads in both directions. Making matters worse, it was the weekend of the annual Mackinac Bridge walk. Throngs of 'weekend warriors' filled camping grounds past capacity.

Since finding a vacant campground was out of the question, we kept our eyes peeled for a likely-looking spot. Passing through Lake Superior State Forest, Sharon spied a faint track disappearing off into the woods. We waited for a rare break in traffic, then rushed our bikes into the concealing forest.

Once we were in 50 feet and behind a few trees, it was near impossible for anyone to see us. And, when we sat down, we couldn't even see over the waist-high ferns surrounding us. Talk about secluded and private. Ah, the joys of cycle touring ... and finding an impromptu camp spot.

We finally fried up the steak that had been bouncing in my pannier for the past couple of days. "If I don't get food poisoning," I said, carving off a tasty morsel, "this is perfect!"

"And we still have a 'World's Largest Cinnamon Bun' for dessert," Sharon reminded me, boiling a pot of tea.

Life doesn't get much better.
