Four Seasons In One Day
In Ely, after admiring the Cathedral, the Leisure Centre allowed us to have showers for a dollar each. A woman asked where we were going. "Wales," popped into my head as a suitable response.
"I wish they would fall off and float away," she said. "I'd even give 'em the shovel meself. Suppose there are some good ones, but I don't know where. They are good singers though," she allowed.
Out of Soham we took a wrong turn and ended up on a dead-end road. Six dogs came bounding out to greet us. When we enquired about the dead-end the dogs' owner said we might be able to get through on the foot path "since it's dry, because it's dry."
My gosh. They certainly had a different definition of dry than I did. Crops had yellowed because they were too wet. Ah well, it could be worse we learned. We could be in Scotland. There they had sleet and snow. "Most there has ever been in June," the dog lady told us. We thanked our lucky stars we weren't there.
We took the footpath and in a short distance set up in a farmer's field. Several walkers passed. I heard someone say: "Bloody tent." They either didn't like us camped there or were astonished that someone was crazy enough to be out in a tent in that weather.
A woman told us: "You can see all four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter in Britain in a single day." No wonder the years felt like they passed so quickly.
