Two for the Road

Bicycle touring Italy

1 Wild Asparagus

The sailing to Civitavecchia left port at midnight. Taking our assigned seats, I tried to sleep but couldn't get comfortable. The whole seating area was non-smoking, but that didn't stop two guys beside us from smoking a night cap joint. Maybe they thought it was a sign for tobacco? I got up and found the cinema was playing a western in English.

When we docked in Civitavecchia, Sharon wanted to go to Rome. We were only fifty kilometers away. She suggested we leave our bikes at the station and take the train. I didn't want to blow my past two weeks of relaxation by hassling in Rome for a couple of days. I promised that I would go to Rome some other time.

From Civitavecchia we climbed past two castles on our way to Lake Bracciano. The lake was a perfect round gem, leftover from an old caldera. We found a little spot for the tent behind some bushes along the water's edge. Just as we were settling in, four guys came along looking for wild asparagus. Holding aloft a few shoots, they informed us it was delicious in spaghetti.
