Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Two for the Road Bicycle touring Italy
7 So That's What I Look Like
We received a warm welcome upon our arrival in Gubbio. In the town plaza a little boy ran over, said something to Sharon's furry bear strapped atop her rear pannier, scratched its fuzzy head, then leaned over and kissed it. His mother finally caught up to him and admonished him not to touch anything.
We moored our transport to a cement bench and went off exploring. It was one of the few times we hadn't left either of us with the bikes, but we decided most people looked like culture seekers rather than bike thieves. Met two South Korean priests studying scriptures in Rome for eight years who told us cycling was good in south South Korea.
Mass had just ended and churches were open. We saw colossal paintings in equally massive churches. Modern day apostles watched over the brethren: video cameras were mounted on each side of the church taping our every move.
In one church, grotesquely on display inside glass enclosed coffins were remains of past religious figures. One chap looked particularly displeased, appearing as though he had recently been dug up. His discoloured gnarled face gaped tortuously open. Nodding towards him, Sharon said, "That one looks like you when you have to take a leak and can't find anywhere."
