33 Undefinable

Rain, rain and more rain. A drizzle continued throughout the night. Fortunately we pitched our tent on high ground beside the clear flowing river. I had no desire to turn a bike trip into a canoe journey. I wondered if our abode would float?

The inside of the tent stayed dry with only the slightest condensation. A few drops of rain got inside whenever we opened the fly to make periodic hasty trips attending to nature's call. With the continuous rain we hunkered in, as we didn't want to venture far. The never-ending mass of gray clouds appeared to have permanently swallowed the sun. I couldn't even tell where the sun was. The dark and dismal setting fit the somber mood perfectly as I read cheery Stephen King stories. I wished I had a roaring fire to curl up beside.

Having stocked up on groceries for the weekend we were in good stead in the larder department. I even got rid of most of that horrid plum jam. It had been fermenting, swelling up the sides of the Yoplait bottle and made a hoosh sound when I unscrewed the top. Maybe the bottle was trying to upchuck the contents?

Sharon succeeded in getting the cork out of the wine bottle. I guess she didn't like having to work for it.

The next day was still gray. At least the rain wasn't coming down constantly. We planned another inside day and spent the day reading, eating and sleeping. It was so sedate, I was sleeping very well. No one from town had stumbled upon our camping spot while out walking their dog. The bushes were waterlogged. The snails in the forest seemed to be the only ones enjoying it.

In the late afternoon the clouds began gaining some semblance of form. There was still no break in them, but at least they were not just one undefinable mass. We were out of reserve food stores, so we would be hitting the road in the morning, rain or shine. Personally, I was cheering for shine.
