32 Hold the Applause
Along with the endless miles of red soil there were stork nests everywhere. The electrical poles were topped with huge twigs, straw and clay mud stork nests weighing several pounds. We passed a municipal dump filled with storks. I went down the road dinging my bell and hooting and hollering to scare the storks. With black tipped wings they obligingly took to the air in an ungainly fashion.
Sharon and Susan received rounds of applause as they cycled past a group of school boys waiting for their bus. The locals stopped and stared, but few spoke to us. One old guy engaged Sharon in conversation as she waited outside a grocery store. He finally determined she was English and biking with friends. So pleased with himself, he patted Sharon's cheek before hobbling off.
