Once Were Warriors

While bicycle touring the North Island in New Zealand we got to take in a hungi and some dancing. Sure, it's cute when he sticks his tongue out. But when the big guys come over, bug out their eyes, and thrust their tongues at you, it's truly frightening! (They also carry massive clubs made of jade or green stone.) Never conquered, Maori are radiant people, musically gifted, with a quick and infectious laugh. Descended from a long line of intense warriors the Maori forefathers met Captain Cook when he landed on the shores of New Zealand. The Maori warriors were so fierce-looking, Captain Cook about-faced, returned to his ship, and sailed away... two years passed before he worked up enough nerve to come back and give it another go.
