thatched roof cottage

Thatched roof cottage, England

Thatched roofs are amazingly thick. My favourites were the ones with intricate designs cut into them. David and Joan, a couple we met while cycling through their village one afternoon, have a thatched roof cottage (affectionately named Cobweb Cottage), and they had just had the thatch redone. They told us it was very expensive to have replaced as there are not many artisans left that still do thatched roofs. And the amount of straw! Their entire front yard was covered to a depth of six feet!
