Koala Bears

At Ulupna Island we were fortunate enough to spot 12 koalas. This slow-moving fellow made a "dash" from one gum tree to another -- a rare sight as koalas rarely move during the day. They are nocturnal and usually spend their days sleeping in the upper branches of the eucalyptus trees on which they feed. By the time we left Ulupna Island we had sore necks from craning upwards to spot koala bears and Neil had fallen off his bike three times -- a little-known hazard of koala-spotting while bicycle touring.

(Possibly the best place for spotting koala in Australia is off the coast of South Australia at Kangaroo Island. There, some 30,000 (as of last Wednesday), of the furry marsupials compete for the delicious eucalyptus leaves that are their favoured food.
