Main street in the outback Australia
town of Williams Creek, doubled as a runway. In an area where
ranches are the size of Great Britain, ranchers use airplanes
and helicopters to check their herds. While we were quaffing
a cool one in the pub, an air radio crackled to life, and a pilot's
voice intoned, "Is there anyone up here?" When the
reply was negative, he sang out, "I'm coming in." In
a few minutes he landed, taxied up to the bar, and was soon imbibing
a cold one of his own. Apparently herding from the air is mighty
thirsty work! |
