Temperatures are so extreme in the Australian town of Coober Pedy that many residents live underground in old opal mines. Additions to the family home is said to be a simple matter -- purchase a little explosives, and BOOM! A new family room! We actually camped underground in Coober Pedy (site of the Mad Max films). It froze overnight above ground, but we were warm and dry at about 10 degrees Celsius in our underground bunker. And we didn't have to worry about the sun waking us early. |
