October 8 Sunday sunny 31ºC (in the sun) Bicycle touring Germany We pulled our loaded touring bikes to a stop by a sparkling pond for lunch. Lots of jumping and splashing fish. Quite a few bike riders are out for day rides. Some wave as they cycle past. It is great to see all different ages out for a bike ride. We pulled our touring bicycles to a stop to explore Dinkelsbuhl, Germany. I love these German town names. Did I mention that Dinkelsbuhl is near Detwang? Many people were walking around Dinkelsbuhl. Flower boxes line house windows. It certainly brightens up the surroundings. The buildings in Dinkelsbuhl are topped with an A frame. Dark stained wood timbers are set into the house sides. Sharon and Sherry slipped over to the market, while I read beside the bikes. They returned saying the market was packed. Sherry has quite a pronounced limp. We cycled for a ways. Near five o'clock, we hit a village. Sherry had promised to phone Murray. By the time she was finished it was almost dark and we still had to find our host family in a village near here. By the time we got to Hansfarm, where we were staying with a host family, we had pedalled 70 kilometres. Our host mother, commenting on our day's kilometres, said, "That's enough." She and a girlfriend had cycled to Budapest along the Rhone River. She didn't recommend it though - lots of cars and no bike lanes. Her husband doesn't bike tour. Kind of like me. She says she has never been to the eastern part of Germany and would like to go there. She fed us wonderful apple strudel and cupful after cupful of tea. We retired early to take full advantage of the soft beds and separate quarters. |
