July 6 Wednesday Bicycle touring from Edmonton Alberta - Beaumont Alberta
School finishes Tuesday June 28. Jennifer, the teacher whom I share a classroom with, works Monday, then I finish off with the big party Tuesday afternoon.
Susan, a good friend who used to live in Edmonton and whom we have cycled with on numerous occasions, flies into the Edmonton municipal airport from Victoria July 1. We pack house contents for the next few days and finally hit the road Wednesday night July 6 at 7:30 PM.
We take the bike path over the Quesnel Bridge then head east to Calgary Trail Hwy #2 south till Nisku. By the time we reach Beaumont it is after 10 PM. We are looking for a schoolyard or churchyard to spend the night. There is a huge old church on the hill. Then, as we are coming into Beaumont, Sharon sees a gravel RV parking area. We pull in and set up camp.
Sharon is tired and ready for bed, but Susan says her tummy is growling. We decide to walk up the hill into town to see if we can score a couple of chocolate bars. Bastile Pizza is open till midnight, so we go in and order two extra-large pizzas. We take them outside to a little park bench and happily wolf them down. Sharon and Susan have cold goosebump legs so they use the pizza boxes as leg warmers. It works well until I eat their leg warmers. That's the hottest pizza I've ever had. Straight out of the oven. Hot burning cheese stuck to the roof of my mouth. Worth it though. Delicious. Best pizza I've ever had. Sitting on a park bench at midnight eating pizza and watching stars. How good can it get?
We trundle back to our tents, stick in the old earplugs to block traffic noise and quickly fall asleep.
