September 1 Thursday Bicycle touring from Lake Michigamme Michigan to motel near Lake Superior
This morning, the lake was shrouded in a thick coat of fog. There are lots of apple trees at the rest stop and around the hillside. The apples taste delicious. Small, but tart.
We hopped on our bikes and hit the road. Traffic was horrendous. Hwy 28 joined with 41 and there are tons of trucks, campers, and cars. We still have a shoulder to cycle on, but it is way too busy to be any fun.
We decide to go into Ishpeming and Negaunee to try and hit a county road that may be more conducive to cycle touring. Hwy 48990 turned out to be great for cycling. It had good scenery, a wide shoulder, and little traffic.
Then we cycled County Road 533 into Marquette. People had warned us about the steep hills coming up. Guess they thought we'd never be able to pedal them on our touring bikes. But the hills turned out to be more down than up. Sometimes, when you're on tour, you get lucky.
We cycled in to a visitor's center. There is a great bike path with flowers all along the side and a good view of Lake Superior.
Today is our tenth wedding anniversary. We decided to splurge on a motel to celebrate. We bought a steak, mushrooms, and fruit. We spread out our camping gear inside the motel room to dry it out. Our room looks like Camper's Village with all the cycling gear strewn about. The showers are fantastic. We watched TV on the soft bed, all warm and cozy. Then we went for a Jacuzzi. That was a mistake. After cycling on a loaded touring bike all day, my legs feel like lead now.
