January 11 Wednesday Bicycle touring France from a mountain hut on Corsica to Propriano Corsica The wind entered our sheltered enclave and we awaken to a flapping fly. The sky is overcast as we pack up our bicycle touring tent. We push our bikes back through the winding path to the roadway. Our first night of free camping on the island of Corse where no free camping is allowed has been a success. The road continues to climb. We ride our fully loaded touring bicycles past the neighbor's house and notice it is abandoned also. The side we could see still has shutters on the windows, but now, looking from above, we notice the roof is gone from one end. The view is fantastic overlooking the foamy sea surrounded by mountains and thick green vegetation. Bicycle touring on Corsica does bring advantages. The wind is shrieking. Thankfully it is behind us. At Olmeta Beach we ducked behind some bushes by a rock wall to eat while watching huge waves crash onto the rocks. We buy groceries in Propriano, then cycle out of town, looking for a free camping spot along the river. In a few kilometres we find an open gate into a burnt olive grove and push our fully loaded touring bicycles inside. We are out of sight from the road along the river bank. We cook pasta from the tent door while watching stars and car lights along the opposite side of the river, high up on the mountain side. I like the challenge of finding the perfect camp site. One with a great view, but also hidden from prying eyes waiting to discover us. Flat. Sheltered. Unfortunately those requirements don't always appear just when we need them. Part of the thrill I suppose. Sharon is not as keen. |
