Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
January 12 Thursday Bicycle touring France from Propriano Corsica, still free camped alongside the river
We awaken to howling wind and pattering of rain that increases to a crescendo. We stay in the tent waiting for it to calm. We read and write while eating chocolate and Corsica oranges.
Noticed people on the island are different from the mainland French. They yell out encouragement in lively choruses as we pass, unlike the reserved French. They are darker in complexion and they don't speak pure French but something that sounds like it is mixed with Italian.
Saw two policemen standing by the road. The waved to us and the cars as we pass. We never see anyone pulled over. Police don't stand beside the road at home and wave to motorists. Sharon figures they must be elected here and are out campaigning. It is very interesting. I wonder if people wave back? Beside us, that is.
