Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
January 24 Tuesday Bicycle touring Italy camped near Burgos Sardinia to Gusana Sardegna
Packed up our bicycle touring gear this morning and hit the trail before the shepherd or military showed up. The sheep were just coming for a drink -- their reflections doubling the size of the herd -- as we pushed our laden bicycles up the four-wheel drive embankment.
We cycled off into a strong wind and took a crossroad to be more with the wind. Passed a nuclear power stack. Interesting that they have that on the island.
Bought groceries and bread in Ottana and then sat in the square eating with a view of a huge old 12th-century Romanesque church.
Still climbing the mountains. Some great views. Slow going in low gear on our fully loaded touring bicycles.
Sharon wanted oranges, but the fruit store was closed. As we left town we practically ran into the back end of a fruit seller's truck. We stocked up with three kilos and happily climbed out of town. And climbed and climbed. We are right in the middle of the island between the highest mountain ranges. By days end we can see the snow in the mountains above Fonni where they have a ski lift. The snow reminds us to phone home. We see Star Trek in Italian as Sharon uses a phone in a bar. We buy the worst Cola I've ever tasted. We find a great camp spot by artificial Lake Gusana used for hydro electricity and irrigation. The sun sets over the massive range.
