Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
January 23 Monday Bicycle touring Italy camped near Burgos Sardinia
It was windy and totally overcast this morning as a few raindrops hit the fly. We half-jokingly said we may as well stay here all day -- even though we have no food. And that is exactly what we did. Our only minor intrusions were a shepherd across the river banging on a fence post. We now think he may have been trying to get our attention -- but he didn't call out and we were snuggled comfortably within the confines of our artificial womb.
Later we were visited in person by three members of some division of the army -- apparent from their uniforms and stripes on their shoulders -- to check us out.
"Everything okay?" one asked, which was about the extent of his English. Assuring them "Si" they shortly returned to their army vehicle waiting at the top of the road. I was watching them descend the hillside. Each of them took a different route down through the trees. Other than that we haven't been outside much to admire the slow moving river with reeds. I heard a bird that sounds like an electronic telephone ringer. A multitude of sheep passed by on the other bank amidst a dinging and jangling of bells.
We drink hot chocolate, read tourist brochures of Sardinia, and mark routes on our map, while listening to shortwave broadcasts from London and Washington.
The daylight hours are still short -- I'm writing this by candlelight as my stomach protests its emptiness.
