Bike Touring Journals by Neil Anderson and Sharon Anderson Bicycle touring journals
March 3 Friday Bicycle touring Italy Sardinia from a forest near Fordongianus Sardinia to some bushes on the high plane past Laconi Sardegna
The wind was behind us for a change. Lots of hills to climb on our heavily loaded touring bicycles towards Laconi though. It was noon before we stopped pedalling long enough to buy bread -- of course it was finito. I have to learn to stop sooner. They probably have little variation in the sales amount day to day in these villages and know exactly how much to make.
We leaned our touring bicycles against a railing and ate in a small playground park. Roosters crowing in town still amuses me. The rock music blaring in the background was incongruent with the rural atmosphere around us.
We have cycled back up to 3000 feet and have tucked our lightweight cycle touring tent behind some trees and bushes to cut the wind and be out of sight from the road. We stopped in Laconi to fill our water bottles. I saw a tap on a house and pulled my bike in. I knocked on the door to ask if it was okay to fill up. There was no answer at the door, so I proceeded to help myself to the water tap. As I finished, I glanced up to a balcony above. An old woman was out there watching me. "Gracious," I say. "Niente," she says. "Canada," I say. "Africa?" she says. Yikes! Am I that dark? And there hasn't even been that much sun.
