Cycle touring the Oregon coast. Along the Oregon coast, giant sea stacks -- blocks of erosion-resistant rock isolated from the land by the sea -- dwarf a person walking near the surf. Sea stacks began years ago as part of a headland or sea cliff, then, after receiving a relentless pounding by waves and sand acting upon the rock like liquid sandpaper, softer, weaker parts of the rock eroded, leaving harder, more resistant rock behind. Some of their shapes are works of art. |
