Sharon and I had pedalled our loaded touring
bikes to the top of Mount Mazama to enjoy the spectacular setting
of Crater Lake. Only us and a handful of foreign tourists were
there. The tourists, in broken English, politely requested we
take their photo in front of the lake.
"One step back..." we kept saying
to them, waving them backwards, ever closer to the rock ledge...
and impending thousand-foot drop. With nervous giggles and backward
glances, they played along.
On our turn for them to take our picture,
the tables was turned! Uttering their newly-acquired English
phrase, they waved us toward the drop-off in a comical accent,
"One step back!"
