A Big Boy Snowplow while bicycle touring
in Oregon. Yes, it was supposed to be summer! One lane down from
Crater Lake had been plowed ... we skirted the road-closed barricade
(that's the trouble with bikes) and headed downhill. About halfway
along, we ran into the snow removal crew coming up the mountain
road. They flagged me to a stop (that's Sharon ahead in the righthand
lane). "It's clear all the way to the bottom," the
driver in the orange rotary plow informed me. When I commented
that I had never seen so much snow in June before, he crowed,
"This is nothing! In the winter we get 50 feet of the stuff."
Folks waiting in their cars at the bottom
barricade were somewhat surprised to see Sharon and me zoom towards
them. "What's this?" the fellow in the front-most car
grinned at us as we pulled to a stop in front of him. "They
send bikers through first, and if they make it, they let the
cars go?"
